“All in Print China 2006” successfully concluded its four-day show on June 17 to positive results. During the event, more than 90,000 domestic and overseas trade visitors from 60 different countries and regions browsed through the latest innovations and products in the print industry. In addition, more than 13 countries sent delegations to the show, South Korea, Japan, South Africa, the Czech Republic, the Philippines, India, Indonesia, Thailand, Malaysia and Romania, as well as visitor groups from Hong Kong and Macao Special Administrative Region and Taiwan Province. More than 10,000 professional buyers pre-registered on the official website of All in Print China (www.allinprint.com) before the event’s opening day.

Traditionally, Indian printing and packaging majors have sourced brand-new equipment from European and Japanese manufacturers. Smaller printing companies rely on secondhand refurbished equipment, which is usually European. Today, there is a change of mindset. The Indian printing industry, struggling with huge capital costs and the consequent burden of capital repayment, is continuously examining cheaper options to reduce asset costs and running expenses. Chinese equipment is on its way to emerging as a viable alternative.
In terms of sheer size, the Chinese printing industry is among the largest in the world and has left India far behind. The main difference in terms of equipment is that India does not have indigenous manufacturers of quality machinery, while a large part of equipment used in China is locally produced. Needless to add, the Chinese are also large users of imported equipment. The XXL size printing units, I saw recently, have both imported and domestic.
The next question logically is - can Chinese home-grown equipment be used in India? The answer depends on two criteria - the quality of the machinery itself, and after sales-service. During my last visit, I was pleased to see that the overall quality of equipment has improved. Components are being sourced from global leaders or are produced with imported brand names under local license. The workmanship is good, the tooling is world-class. All this augurs well for machinery exports from China, though I must add that the Chinese are not inventors but innovators. China is today a source for basic equipment and not for world-class technology. They make look-alike European and Japanese equipment cheaper.
After sales-service emerges an important issue. Manufacturers are not keen to work directly with Indian companies as language is a huge barrier. This basically implies that users would need to work with an agent, who may or may not provide adequate support. Indian printers are used to prompt after sales service from the manufacturers in the West.
